Scene Descriptions

  • First Scene:

The first few seconds are completely dark, and light gradually starts to come into the frame.
The first visual that appears is a timelapse of a sunset along with my voiceover that is of me
reciting my spoken-word piece on life. I start by reciting the first couple of stanzas of the poem,
and then after messing up on a line of poetry I stop and start over.
In the moment that I mess up the timelapse also pauses, and then as I begin to revise my mistake
it rewinds also starts from the beginning of the clip as well. The second time I recite up until the
second stanza, which is when I perform a line that sounds like a cliche metaphor (
I say this in the voiceover), and this time start over from the beginning of the second stanza to
revise the actual text. The timelapse pauses after I stop reciting the poem, and rewinds to the beginning
again. The third time that I recite up until the third stanza of my poem, and decide to
revise the entire stanza because I don’t believe the ideas are creatively introduced, so I begin again.
The timelapse also repeats. The fourth and final time that I recite this poem I read over all three stanzas,
along with the timelapse playing in the background the entire time.
I finish by saying, “Okay, time to add more.”

Purpose: The purpose of this scene is to reflect the writing process in a creative way,
because all poets continuously revise their work multiple times before creating a draft that they like.

  • Second Scene:

My first phrase in the second scene is, “Before I show you my poetry, let me explain
why I fell in love with writing in the first place.”
I move on to explain how and when my love for spoken-word and poetry started,
and all of the reasons are visually explained through being drawn and written in my journal.
I explain that the first time I ever heard about my talent for writing was in the sixth grade, and a
year later I was writing poetry on an almost daily basis.
Once I started high school is when I finally started to perform spoken-word pieces.
I explain the different opportunities that I have had because of poetry and spoken-word,
while drawing the names and symbols of each of them along with different clips
and videos of myself and others that were involved with my high school’s poetry club performing.
I move on to show the clips of my favorite spoken-word artists performing,
followed by a picture of myself performing at my first poetry slam in high school.
I explain that the reason why I loved spoken-word so much was that I was able to evoke sincere reactions from people with my words.

  • Third Scene:

The frame is now focused on my journal, open and on my desk next to a pile of pens and markers.
I start to show the drafts of my poems throughout the years. I start flipping through the pages with
a fast-forward effect, stopping on specific pages that display the name of one of my favorite
poems along with the date it was written. My favorite stanza of each poem is written on the page
next to the poem’s name. Soon after, I start to explain what inspired me to write each piece.
While I’m explaining the sources of my inspiration typewriter text animations appears on the
screen to highlight specific words that I'm saying. I’ll be drawing symbols that resemble
my sources of inspiration on the next few journal pages.
